The Friday after Labor Day, the traffic on Highway 89 thins by about half and the parking lot at Dyer View has open spaces for the first time since June. If you live on the west shore, this is the stretch of the year you moved here for. It is also the stretch when a handful of your favorite places quietly lock their doors until spring, and knowing which ones, and by what date, is the difference between a well-planned Sunday and a wasted drive.
The west shore does not wind down after Labor Day so much as it swaps calendars. One calendar runs from Memorial Day to a hard October 31 hinge, and everything on it belongs to visitors. The other calendar runs the rest of the year and belongs to the people who live here. This post is a field guide to the seven weeks where both calendars are open at once.
The October 31 hinge
Most of the seasonal businesses on the west shore share one closing date, and it is not the day after Labor Day. It is Halloween. Plumas Pines Resort opens seasonally from May 1st until October 31st, which means the marina, the RV park, the store, and the Bar and Grill all run through the last weekend of October. The Bar and Grill listing currently shows "Closed Until May 1, 2026," a reminder that once the doors shut for the winter they stay shut for a full six months.
That single date pulls a lot of the west shore's dining and lakefront service with it. Here is how the shoulder season actually breaks down for the places most residents rely on:

The pattern is clear enough that you can plan around it. Anything with a dock or a courtesy slip is running on the resort calendar. Anything on a paved road that you can reach without a boat is running on the resident calendar.
Where breakfast still happens
The two west-shore breakfast options come from opposite ends of the spectrum. Carol's Prattville Café sits on the west shore of Lake Almanor a stone's throw from the water, was established in 1971, and enjoys a reputation for quality, good service and family atmosphere. It is where the fishing guides stop before a morning on the lake and where the second-home owners bring their in-laws once. In September and early October the wait shortens, the deck stays warm through mid-morning, and the maple bacon French toast sandwich is still on the board.
Almanor West Grill is the other option, and it lives upstairs at the golf course pro shop at 111 Slim Drive. The 9-hole course plays a 6,318-yard, par 72 forest-lined loop, and with two very different sets of tee markers you feel like you are playing 18 unique holes. The course and restaurant are open to the public, while the beach, sports courts, and boat ramp are private and reserved for property owners. That distinction matters in shoulder season. Play a mid-week round in mid-October and you will have the fairways to yourself, then walk upstairs for a beer without a reservation.
The trail is different this fall
The 11-mile Lake Almanor Recreation Trail is the west shore's marquee amenity in any season, but this year the northern half of it is doing something new. CalTrans is continuing construction on a north extension of the trail this season, a paved Class I multiuse path separated from the highway by a vegetated buffer of at least 75 feet, part of a long-term vision to encircle the entire lake, running 3.8 miles from the big ditch diversion channel near Chester south to connect with the existing trail on the Lassen National Forest.
The forest along the new segment was almost entirely burned in the 2021 Dixie Fire, but the views of the lake and Lassen Peak are spectacular. If you live in Almanor West or Prattville, the practical implication is that your morning walk this September has construction equipment on one end and the same quiet pine corridor you have always known on the other. The southern trailheads at Dyer View and Canyon Dam are untouched, and Dyer View remains the recommendation for a short outing: paved parking, a restroom, picnic tables, and access year-round, though potable water is not available.
For visitors staying with you in the shoulder season, the trail also connects the community edges in a way that is hard to appreciate in July. The paved, nonmotorized trail stretches for 11 miles along the west shore of Lake Almanor, connecting Almanor, Lake Almanor West and Prattville. One car at Dyer View, one at Rocky Point Campground off Highway 89, and you have a downhill-leaning point-to-point ride with a lunch stop at Plumas Pines in the middle, right up until the last weekend of October.
If you have out-of-town guests coming after Labor Day, plan the ride for a weekday. The trail surface still collects pine needles and root heaves, and a hybrid or mountain bike handles it better than a road bike.
The launch question
The boat launch decision is the one that catches new residents off guard. There are two public options on this side of the lake, and only one of them is a shoulder-season answer. Lake Almanor has two public boat launches, one at Canyon Dam open year-round and the Almanor Boat Launch on the west shore of the lake north of Prattville open seasonally. As the lake draws down through October, the Almanor Boat Launch becomes progressively less usable, and by the time Plumas Pines shuts on October 31 the practical answer for a west-shore owner who wants to fish in November is a drive down Highway 89 to Canyon Dam.
That drive is short but worth doing once in September, before you need to do it in a hurry. The Canyon Dam ramp shares a lot with the trail's southern terminus, so a shoulder-season fishing morning and an afternoon walk with the dog can be stacked on one trip. The Rec Trail is non-motorized and barrier-free, which means your dog can relax more than on busier paths.
A weekday rhythm you cannot get in July
The best argument for owning on the west shore is that mid-September through mid-October produces a version of the lake that summer renters never see. Water temperatures ease off the July highs. The trail is quiet. The Almanor West course opens tee times you could not touch in August. Carol's has bar seats at 8 a.m. Plumas Pines still has live music some Friday and Saturday nights, but you can hear the conversation at your own table.
Then there is the fall color, which the west shore does not advertise but which shows up in the aspen and cottonwood pockets between Prattville and Canyon Dam in the last two weeks of October. Time a walk from the Dyer View parking area south toward Rocky Point on a clear afternoon in that window and you will understand why the residents who stay through the shoulder season tend to stay through it every year.
The seven weeks between Labor Day and Halloween are the west shore's most honest self. Everything that runs, runs on a shorter list. Everything that closes, closes on the same day. Once you know the pattern, you can plan around it, and the fall becomes the season you tell people about instead of the season you brace for.
